Reid’s thoughts on sleeping

June 30th, 2008

For a long time now, we’ve wrapped Reid up at naptime and at night in The Miracle Blanket©, which I lovingly call the `Baby Straight Jacket`.  We bought this thing when Graham had such bad colic and acid reflux; it helped calm him and keep him snuggly at night.  Anyway, it has helped Reid too for a long time.

The problem is, he’s getting too big for it, now that he’s 6 months old.  According to our pediatrician, he’s old enough now to put himself to sleep and stay asleep at night.  So we began Ferberizing him help him adjust to sleeping on his own.  It ain’t going so well.  The first night, little guy screamed and cried for more than 4 hours.  We’re on night 3 now, and he’s getting progressively better (thank goodness).

Reid let us know how he feels about the process just today, on the way home from lunch!

Poor baby. And poor parents. We used the Miracle Blanket, too. We stopped using it cold turkey and it worked ok. But it was rough at first. We ended up changing her into long-sleeved pajamas every time we put her to sleep so she would still feel fabric on her arms and legs. Then we held her arms snug to her sides until she got drowsy. Then we would put her in her crib and let her fall asleep. It took a little bit of time, but we gradually shortened it and it saved us a lot of tears.

    Good luck with the process!

I’m giving away a new Miracle Blanket at my blog, http://hollytriedit.blogspot.com. Enter the contest and you might win a baby shower gift for one of your friends.
