Reid’s thoughts on sleeping
For a long time now, we’ve wrapped Reid up at naptime and at night in The Miracle Blanket©, which I lovingly call the `Baby Straight Jacket`. We bought this thing when Graham had such bad colic and acid reflux; it helped calm him and keep him snuggly at night. Anyway, it has helped Reid too for a long time.
The problem is, he’s getting too big for it, now that he’s 6 months old. According to our pediatrician, he’s old enough now to put himself to sleep and stay asleep at night. So we began Ferberizing him help him adjust to sleeping on his own. It ain’t going so well. The first night, little guy screamed and cried for more than 4 hours. We’re on night 3 now, and he’s getting progressively better (thank goodness).
Reid let us know how he feels about the process just today, on the way home from lunch!

We’ll keep trying.

Happy half-birthday to Reidy Monster! He just had is six month doctor’s checkup, where the little guy weighed in at 16 lbs 14oz (50th percentile), 25.5″ (25th percentile), and head circumference of 41.7 cm (10th percentile). We couldn’t find Graham’s measurements from his six month check-up, but right now, Reid weighs less than Graham did at 4 months!

Graham’s friend Harris came over to play this morning. The guys ate some fruit and then played all morning in the backyard. We’re having a crazy heat wave, so Kristi set up the sprinkler for the boys to jump through.
Needless to say, they had a blast running around and giggling. After they dried off, the guys made pretzel necklaces — an art project you can eat!

We’ve been keeping a close eye on Reid’s milestones, primarily to see if he is a late bloomer like Graham or if he’s more typical of babies you read about. He seems to be following the average schedule for doing new things. He is above average in terms of his leg strength; the kid can basically stand up on 2 legs, needing only a parental hand for balance.
Anyway, this weekend he rolled over by himself, from his tummy to his back 3 times! And he tried to roll from his back to his tummy, but he couldn’t quite make it.

Our family had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. We first went to the NC Zoo, which is the nation’s largest walk-through natural-habitat zoo. We saw tons of animals up close, and got some great pictures. We got there as early as we could, and I think we beat most of the crowd. The boys did a great job of making it all day, considering that they did not get their normal nap. Graham was mesmerized by the Harbor Seals and Sea Lions; I think they were his favorite.

He was very excited to see the Polar Bears; but Willy was feeling very lazy when we got there. He was not all about moving around; he just slept sprawled out on the rocks.

We saw Elephants, Giraffes, Zebras, Ostriches, Bears, Cougars, Alligators, Rhinoceroses, and lots more. Be sure to check out all the pictures we took from the trip!
The following day was the first day of pool season at our neighborhood club. Daddy and Graham cruised out there in the late afternoon. We figured that it’d be packed right at the beginning on opening day, and also the water was a tad chilly since it is very early summer. Graham jumped in the big pool twice, and played in the baby pool a lot. We had a great time, but only stayed about an hour.
However, after pool time, we came home and our family quickly ate dinner outside so that we could make s’mores in the back yard! We have a little decorative fire pit thingy that we placed on the back patio (naturally, we had water and baking soda in case the fire got out of control)(it didn’t). It was a big hit, although Graham was somewhat partial to the marshmallows, and Reid didn’t get to have any.

So that was a ton of fun… The next day we packed up a picnic lunch and headed to the pool, where we hung out with friends and swam for a couple of hours. It was busy, but bearable considering the date. The water was still a little chilly, but Graham jumped in, and watched Daddy jump off the diving board, and all that stuff. Reid is still a little young to be slathered with sunscreen, but he dipped his feet in the baby pool (and did not like it).
Other than that, we ate al fresco on the back patio for several meals, and really enjoyed the nice weather.
